How to Adjust the Height of Your Shower Head Yourself?

A downside to being tall? The showerheads will throw water at the neck area and not up the head. I am more than 6 feet tall. Most showerheads will not reach the neck area so bathing in water is always a chore for me.

I didn’t have the budget to replace the entire showerhead assembly so I started looking at cheaper options to adjust the showerhead height.

In this article, we will demonstrate how to adjust your showerhead’s height so it sprays water directly over your head.

Are you looking to adjust the height or other accessories for your shower head?

Yes, you might need a shower arm or other accessories in order to raise your shower head. Here are some options for accessories:

S Shower Arm

An S showerarm is the best option to raise the shower head height. This arm is the shape of an S and puts the showerhead 4-5inches above its current position.

The best thing about an S arm is its reliability. However, the S arm is not flexible so your kids might complain that they can’t adjust their shower head height.

Swivel Joint

You can adjust the height of the showerhead from your mobile device by installing a swivelball joint. The joint is flexible and can be moved in all directions. You can also adjust the showerhead in any direction.

Some swivel balls joints allow you even to turn the shower head towards the downwards. This accessory is ideal for homes with small children.

Shower Arm Adjustable

It works exactly like an S Shower Arm, but is adjustable. You can adjust the height of the shower head to make it suitable for bathing. However, adjustable shower arm are more costly than S shower arms. Adjustable shower arms can be a better option if you are prepared to spend more.

Wall Mounted Handheld shower head holder

Fixed showerheads are well suited for adjustable shower arms and swivel balls joints. Wall-mounted shower head holders are a great option for handheld showerheads. It’s easy to mount and require no drilling.

Steps to Adjusting the Shower Head Height

Now you’re ready to go. These are the steps that you should follow to adjust height of the shower head.

Step 1 Gathering Materials

To install the shower head, you will need to have some tools. A shower head height adjustment doesn’t require many tools. These items are essential:

  • S shower arm or swivel-ball joint adjustment
  • Teflon tape
  • Crescent wrench
  • Toothbrush

Step 2 Remove the Old Arm and Shower Head

Use a crescent wrench or a knife to remove the old shower head. Take the showerhead off the arm by holding it with a towel.

Now, put the shower head into a box. Then take off the shower arm. Before removing the head and arm from the shower, turn off the water supply.

The buildup of rust and minerals can make it difficult to disassemble the shower arms. Use a high-quality penetrating fluid to clean the arm. Then, use the wrench and remove it.

You do not need to take the shower arm out if you have chosen a pivotal ball joint. It is easy to attach the showerhead by just assembling it with the shower arms using a wrench.

Sometimes the existing head of the shower doesn’t fit perfectly with the swivel, so you might look into purchasing a new head to attach with it.

Step 3 Install the New Accessory

Now it’s time for the installation of the new accessory. Screw the new adjustable shower arm, or S showerarm, with the water connector valve.

You can use Teflon tape for leakage prevention on the shower arms’ ends. Screw the showerhead with the arm and you’re good to go.

Step 4 Test it

Now it’s time for you to test the installation and make sure there are no water leaks. Turn on the main water supply. Check the shower arm, and the showerhead thoroughly. Examine the shower head and arm for leaks to make sure everything is functioning properly.

Final Thoughts

These tips make it simple to adjust the height of your showerhead without spending a lot. If your existing showerhead is not compatible with the accessory, it’s worth buying a new accessory.

Finally, make sure you keep the shower head clean to ensure water is thrown with good pressure.
