Trump Assassination Attempt, How Close Was It?

Date:

This was meant to be a happy evening. On Saturday night, some 2,600 journalists, celebrities and politicians gathered in the Washington Hilton ballroom for the White House Correspondents’ Dinner. It’s a Washington tradition the media and the president come together for a night of laughter and a tribute to the freedom of the press.

Trump had never attended before and the night started beautifully. That changed at 8:40 p.m., when shots near the ballroom entrance confirmed what nobody wanted to believe: another Trump assassination attempt was unfolding live.

Secret Service agents yelled “shots fired”. Guests dove under tables. Trump was whisked off the stage. And a 31-year-old Californian with a shotgun and handgun and a series of knives – had just rushed federal agents outside. It was one of the most dire security breaches in recent US history.

8:40-8:42 PM: Secret Service agents in the ballroom shout “shots fired”. Attendees fall under the tables. CNN anchor Wolf Blitzer, who is standing just feet from the shooter in the hallway, is tackled to the ground by police and brought into the restroom next to him to take cover – and so are some 15 others.

~10:30 PM: Trump gives a news conference. He describes Allen as a “very sick person” and a “thug,” commends the Secret Service, and describes Allen as a “lone wolf.”

FBI agents gather outside Allen’s house in Torrance, California, at the end of Saturday night as the investigation grows.

Who Is Cole Allen? The Man Behind the Shooting

Cole Tomas Allen defies the conventional image of someone who is the target of an Trump assassination attempt.

He was 31 years old. He had a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the prestigious Caltech. He had a master’s in computer science from Cal State Dominguez Hills, which he earned last year in 2025. He taught kids how to prepare for college. He developed small video games.

On his LinkedIn page, Allen wrote about himself: “Mechanical engineer and computer scientist by degree, independent game developer by experience, teacher by birth.”

He also tutored part-time for C2 Education in Torrance, California. In December 2024 16 months before the attack, he was “Teacher of the Month” at his job.

In his spare time, he had developed a small video game called Bohrdom that he sold on the Steam platform for $1.99 and had trademarked in 2018. He was reportedly developing another game, First Law.

Those who knew Allen were shocked. An old high school volleyball teammate described him as a “borderline genius” and “super stable”. One of his neighbors told CNN he didn’t see Allen often, but Allen’s father seemed “very talkative”.

Allen had no criminal record. He wasn’t on any law enforcement watch list in D.C. He wasn’t known to be an extremist.

Security officials suspect he had checked into the Washington Hilton the hotel where the dinner was being held. He checked in, waited and then headed to the security checkpoint with three guns.

What Did He Tell Police? The Alleged Motive

trump assassination attempt

Allen told police he wanted to shoot Trump administration officials when he was arrested, according to sources. Two sources told CBS News that. He didn’t specifically mention Trump but said “Trump administration officials”.

The official motive is not yet known. His phone and other electronic devices are being examined, a warrant was being sought to search them. We are yet to learn all the details of what motivated a Caltech graduate and part-time teacher to do this.

Trump told a news conference at the White House later on Saturday night that he thought Allen was a lone wolf and that “we’ll find out in the coming days” why.

The Legal Charges He Faces

The charges were announced at a news conference by U.S. Attorney for Washington D.C., Jeanine Pirro, on Saturday night.

Allen is charged with two federal charges:

Charge 1 Use of a firearm in relation to a crime of violence (18 U.S.C. § 924(c)): It covers use or brandishing of a weapon during a crime of violence.

Charge 2 Assault with a dangerous weapon on a federal agent (18 U.S.C. § 111): The aggravated version of this crime is punishable by 20 years.

Pirro said there could be more charges as the case progresses. Allen will be arraigned on Monday.

Inside the Ballroom, What Eyewitnesses Saw

For those in the room, it was a few minutes they will never forget.

CNN’s Jake Tapper was in the ballroom when he saw the Secret Service race down the aisle. He didn’t hear the shots. “There were people ducking under tables and people were panicked,” he recalled.

Wolf Blitzer was just outside the ballroom a few steps from the shooter when police tackled him to the ground without warning. “They tackle me, the police officers, and they take me back into the men’s room, where it was safe,” he said. Some 15 people were held in that bathroom until the danger had passed.

Weijia Jiang, who was sitting next to Trump on stage when the attack happened later went back on stage to speak to the panic-stricken audience. Her message was simple, yet powerful:

“At a time when we’re talking about the freedom of the First Amendment, we have to talk about how fragile they are. Thank God, everyone is safe and thank you for being here tonight. We’ll do this again.”

Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Dan Scavino, said the attack reminded him of the July 2024 Butler, Pennsylvania rally shooting. “I never thought I’d be on the ground again,” he tweeted.

How the World Reacted

The attack was condemned by world leaders within hours.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he was “glad that the President, the First Lady and all the guests are safe,” and that political violence is “incompatible with democracy”.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said: “Violence must have no place in a democracy and must be strongly condemned.”

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed condolences to Trump and Melania, saying: “Violence must never be the way.”

British Ambassador to the U.S. Christian Turner said British embassy staff were at the event, and thanked the Secret Service for a “swift and professional response”.

People Also Ask

Was Trump injured in the White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting?

No. Trump was not injured. He was evacuated within seconds by the Secret Service and was safely brought to the White House. Melania Trump and all Cabinet members were also unharmed. The only injury was to a Secret Service officer whose bulletproof vest absorbed a bullet he was released from the hospital the same night.

Who is Cole Allen, the WHCA dinner shooter?

Cole Tomas Allen is a 31-year-old man from Torrance, California. He holds a mechanical engineering degree from Caltech and a master’s in computer science from Cal State Dominguez Hills. He worked as a part-time teacher at a tutoring company and developed indie video games on the side. He had no prior criminal record.

What weapons did the shooter use at the Correspondents’ Dinner?

Allen was armed with a shotgun, a handgun, and multiple knives. He exchanged fire with federal agents before being subdued. He was not struck by gunfire and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

What was the motive for the shooting?

According to two sources who spoke to CBS News, Allen told law enforcement he wanted to shoot Trump administration officials. No official motive has been confirmed by the FBI, and his devices are still being analyzed.

Has this ever happened before at the WHCA Dinner?

Nothing of this scale has occurred at the dinner itself before. However, the same hotel the Washington Hilton is where Reagan was shot in 1981 as he was leaving the building.

That same night, Trump linked the attack to Iran in his press conference. If you want the full geopolitical story, our US-Iran War article breaks it all down.

A Final Thought

Regardless of your political leanings, Saturday’s events at the Washington Hilton should be a wake-up call. A press freedom festival a gathering of the news media, the president and those who keep democracy alive nearly became a tragedy at a security checkpoint.

Cole Allen was stopped. The bulletproof vest held. The Secret Service did its job. And the journalists did what they always do – they kept people up to date.

But the question remains. The fact that Trump has been shot at three times in less than two years is not normal. It’s a symptom of something seriously wrong in America. The shooting will be investigated. Allen will face justice. The dinner will happen again.

If we can resolve the rage and hate that lead to moments like this – that’s another question. And it’s not just a dinner in a Washington hotel.

FAQs

How did the Secret Service respond so fast?

Security at the dinner was described by former FBI deputy director Andrew McCabe as “almost on the level of a national security event.” The layered security meant Allen was stopped at the outermost checkpoint and never entered the ballroom.

Why was the hotel lobby accessible to regular guests?

The Associated Press noted that the Washington Hilton’s lobby typically remains open to hotel guests during the dinner, with screening positioned closer to the ballroom not at the hotel entrance. This is now being reviewed as a potential vulnerability.

Did Allen have any known extremist ties?

No. Voter records show him registered with no party affiliation. He donated $25 to the Harris campaign in 2024. No extremist connections have been reported. His devices are being analyzed to establish whether radicalization played any role.

Will the Correspondents’ Dinner happen again?

Yes. Both Trump and Weijia Jiang indicated the event will continue. However, a full security review is expected before any future event takes place.
